Class of 1975 - 30 Year Reunion

Well, I saw my first e-mail on this sight so I might as well let you know what we have planned for our 30th! First of all, whoever reads this, please give me your e-mail address to up-date our mailing list and please pass on this website to others from our class that you keep in touch with. This is always the toughest part, tracking down you all!!. On Friday, August 12, 2005, we will get together at Tanner's in Lee's Summit. Ron Riggs owns the establishment and willingly agreed to let us hang out there. And, from what I hear a lot of you frequent Tanner's so why not invite everyone else! On Saturday, August 13, 2005, we are having a family picnic. Some of you are "grandparents"!! so load up the family and bring them with you. All are welcome. The picnic will be at Baumgardner Park in Blue Springs (next to Centennial Pool) and if you are not familiar with the location, directions will come later. We will have a catered picnic (yet to be determined), a juke-box, loaded with all the favorites from the 70's, various sport activities, along with swimming next door for the kids that would like to. A photographer will be on sight to do a memory book which you can order at that time. My e-mail address is fvg51025@msn.com and
my [Vicki (Jones) Gunn] phone number is 816-228-3155.
Karla (Albertson) Grimes phone number is 816-679-2071.

I believe this is all the info I can pass on for now. We will be having another reunion meeting in a month or so. I will be glad to post the date for any interested in joining our meeting you are more than welcome to come. Thanks, Vicki

Alumni Keep In Touch

Once a month, a group of men who graduated from East High School gathers for breakfast at the Big Biscuit restaurant near U.S. 40 and Lee's Summit Road.
(16506 E US Highway 40, Independence, 64055 - 816 478 6958)
On Wednesday, about 20 alumni who graduated between 40 and 60 years ago chatted over coffee and flapjacks.Among them were (from left) class of 1943 grad Jim Ralls of Raytown, class of 1943 grad Ed Nelson of Kansas City North, class of 1943 grad Herman Mohr of Raytown, class of 1939 grad Jack Fitzgerald of Independence, and class of 1942 grad John Abreo of Lee's Summit.

Thanks to Mike Miller (class of 1977 aka "The Butcher of Biology") for the scan of the 1929 Student Handbook. Mike has provided a lot of the pictures you see on the different pages. To see a picture of Mike look below (Mike doesn't like frogs).

Happy New Year East Bears

The 2005 Reunion Grid is posted on the "Reunion" page. Next year (2006) is the BIG "Multi-Year Reunion", our goal is to have more than 600 to 1000 attend. We plan to have Class photos taken and posted on this site.

Class Reunion information for 2005 needs to be given to the "East Bear Webmaster" so it can be posted on the respective pages. Also there are Years that need Class Moderators, and Seniors Names List. We have come a long way in one year to build this site, and more will be available as the information is provided.

The site has been updated numerous times since late August. The East Bears who are listed on Classmates.com have been updated from 1971 to 1991. We still need the year books from 1986 to 1998. Jeff Sullivan (non Bear) has taken pictures of the East High School 1966 Senior ring, and we hope to have more years and styles represented in the future (did you sell your class ring in the 80s when Gold prices went up into the $400 range in 1980s?). Why BLUE? Green was not an option in 1966, only Black, Blue and Metallic. Yes and the Cap and gowns were allways GREY.

Our School Song - "To East High School"
To East High School, brave and true,
Our voices now we raise,
Over all the city wide, in melodies of praise.
Ever foremost in the fray,
May she always stand,
Guarded loyally and well by our faithful band.
So, let us fight, fight, fight for dear East High
The name we all revere, (we all revere)
And let us fight, fight, fight, for everyone,
So give a rousing Rah!, Rah!, Rah!,
We yell, we yell,
For East High School, we love so dear,
Then let the chorus swell,
For her fair fame, we'll spread the name
Of Dear EAST HIGH.

Thanks to Mike Hamilton,
Class of 1971

Thank you for your quick response.

The BREAKFAST at the Big Biscuit is on (the second)Wednesday (of the month) and is men only. It started out with the class of '43 and has since grown to include some late 30's up to early 50's. It also is happy to include anyone who wishes to attend.

The LUNCHEON referenced in my e-mail is the second Tues-day of each month at Golden Corral at about 36th & Noland Road and is "coed". It is the last business in the strip that starts with an Osco (at 39th) on the south and on the west side of the street. All are welcome.

I appreciate that names and phone numbers are not men-tioned and wonder how you could possibly network all informa-tion discreetly.

I am very busy right now trying to alter my home to take in my 90-yr-old brother-in-law, but when this is complete and if you don't let me forget, I have Eastonians for 1929 and 1930 (I think). Come from a very large family and these belonged to one of my older brothers.

I also have some East Echos from 1941 to 1945. There are separate notebooks for each year listing all persons named in the Echos, which includes the particular Echo, the page and column number. This was a tremendous job and it would be nice if more people could enjoy them. The jokes in them are funny and innocent, a forgotten quality today.

I have read in the past you want a list of the seniors from past years. I have the year books from 1948-49-51-52 and 1954. If you need the names of the seniors from those years I can make the lists and send them to you. I scanned the Eastonian from years 1949 and 1948. If you want the list let me know. I borrowed the books from Ray Allen class of 1940. He has most of the year books that had belonged to Pappy Grube. Jerry Davis (class of 1961)

"MYSTERY BLAST ROCKS SCHOOL (1936), KANSAS CITY, MO.

---Eight sticks of dynamite explode with a roar at the main entrance to East High School, ripping a crater in the concrete floor, smashing bronze doors and shattering windows. There is no clue to the perpetrator of the outrage".

Does anyone have information about this event and pictures that are posted on EBay?

Many updates have been added to the many pages of the East site, including faculty obits, students who are listed on Classmates.com from 1970 to 1989, and all email addresses that were posted in the "Guestbook". The Reagan memorial was moved to the Class Year 1981, and the local gas prices were moved to the bottom of the index page. If you do a search on Yahoo of "East Bears" or "East High School Kansas City" you will find this site. If you have information or pictures of EAST, the faculty, or students, we will post them as space allows.

It is all about 1953 today, thanks to Jerry Elliott Class of 1954

Thanks, Jerry!!!

We still need the following Eastonians: 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, and a better scan of 1954. Also a list of Seniors names for those years would be great!

The Reunion Page has been updated with the latest numbers of seniors and the number of known graduates, either on Classmates.com or who have contacted this site.

We have a contact on creating the "midi" for the School Song - "To East High School", I hope to live to see that day!

If your Class information is not listed, it is because we have no resources to make it happen, so don't be like the "school board", but be pro active....

Wednesday, May 05, 2004

The posting of the first five Eastonians, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, occured today. The names of the Seniors for 1928 to be posted soon.

The obit for Warren Jackman is posted on the 1965 page, and Mr. Ridley death on April 28, 2004 is updated on the Faculty M-Z page.

The East High Graduates who were killed in WWII are posted on the 1945 page, and we have a new picture of the gang on the 1964 page.

Gas prices in the Metro will be posted on the main page near the top beginning today. This morning the price per gallon for regular unleaded was $1.72, this afternoon it is $1.88 per gallon. They just set whatever price they want.

Sunday, April 25, 2004

It is all about 1958 today, thanks to Mike Miller '77

Thanks, Mike!!!

Mike Miller also found and brought to me to scan, the sheet music to the school song "To East High School" which can be seen on the HOME page. You never know where or when information will be provided to the site.

Mike Miller also provided the obit for David W Smith, Class of 1965 who was killed in Vietnam in 1968.

This site has a new email address for the Webmaster: eastbears@sbcglobal.net
If you don't want your email address made public, but want other classmates to be able to contact you, you can send your email information to the webmaster and a list will be complied off line, with the above email address next to your name. Then they can contact that email address and the related info will be forwarded on to you for either accept or reject.

We have had graduates inquiring about their class reunion, and if not, how to get one together. If you are an expert on these matters, please contact the webmaster so their questions can be directed to the proper people.

This page has been renamed the "New EAST ECHO" page in memorium to the great school newspaper that we were familar with.

It is all about 1957 today, thanks to Judy Houtchens who has fled to the desert of Arizona, awaiting the "rebirth of the nation"! She taught us "Typing and Business" and sponsored Beta Sigma Chi, and today gave us the symbol of 1957

So many things have been added I have forgot most of them. A total of 4,518 names are listed for Seniors, mostly in the Sixties, a few years in the Fourties, Seventies, and 1984, with more on the way. The 1969 and 1967 Seniors List, was typed from the 1968 and 1966 Eastonians. Two more Principals were added to the Faculty Page. The 1959 40th Reunion picture has been added. We have Alumni working of the Senior Lists for 1948-1952 and another person working on 1942. The 1966 Page has been updated, and most pages have a Table of Contents listed at the bottom of the page. The Guestbook has been updated and entries are not screened now so the updates are automatic. The only Reunion planned for this year so far, is 1984, check out their T-Shirt design. If you want your email contact information listed on your Class Site for FREE, just contact us at

My brother in law graduated a couple years earlier and has some of the information from class reunions he has attended which should include some class listings. Ill probably have them by the weekend I hope and will be able to process them. In the mean time Ill go through my yearbooks and get the class officers, etc.

Site looks great and the counter indicates it is drawing lots of attention.

I left KC in 63 when I took off for the Navy. Didnt plan to be gone more than 2 years but it ended up being 27. Spent 14 years in Japan and ended up in Norfolk. The kids were finishing school so it seemed to be a good place to settle. My wife and I have 3 children and 7 grandkids. My two daughters live nearby and my son who is in the Army Special Forces lives in North Carolina.

Where did you live during high school? I lived at 23rd and Drury and belonged to Troop 17 which met at Askew.

Jim (Fensom, Class of 1963) Jim has also provided information on Teachers and Staff from the 1959-1960 era, and on "Pappy" Grube who was a teacher at East since the opening of the school. Chief Lone Star's (Tribe of Mic-O-Say) info can be seen at: Faculty List East History

Gary Bean's 1954 and 1956 Pages are NOT ACTIVE now. We hope they will return in the near future!

We are in another slow period, waiting for information about the Years 1926-1958 and 1971-1998. You don't have to be the "Homecoming Queen or Varsity Quarterback" to help with this site, it just takes "everyday people" to make things happen!

Could somebody that is retired, drive over to the "Big Biscuit" (40 Hwy and Lee's Summit Road) on Wednesday, March 10th, at 8:30 AM, drink some coffee, and have Jim Ralls 1943, Ed Nelson 1943, Herman Mohr 1939 and Jack Fitzgerald 1942, to contact the "Reunion Committee" about getting involved and providing information for the 1930s and 1940s? You will know them when you see them!

"East History"

As the History Page grows and develops it will incorporate articles on East as well as the surrounding community.

East history would not be complete without mentioning the financial/jobs base of the area. The corporations that established themselves in the East district are:

Sears Roebuck Catalog Plant and Retail Store, The Chevrolet Plant in the Leeds area, The Ford Plant on Winchester Avenue, Vendo Corporation in the Blue River valley, Union Wire Rope, Veterans Administration Hospital, Montgomery Ward Catalog and Retail Store, National Bellas Hesse Catalog, GAF Corporation, U.S. Government Records Center at Independence Ave and Hardesty, Nelly Don Company, Geoetz Brewery at 18th and Indiana, Sheffield/Armco Steel, Standard Oil Sugar Creek Refinery, Kansas City Southern Railroad, Benson Instrument, Katz/Skaggs/Osco, Milgrams, Kansas City Auto Auction, Allen's Dairy, Sam's Bargain Town, to name a few.

Most of which are closed now, but in our time was the Employers' of our parents, family and neighbors. This rich employment base added to the grow and development of the East area.

If you have stories or information about these subjects, please share your knowledge with "eastbears.org".

something is going wrong!

We have added the "Seniors List" for the following Years: 1970, 1968, 1966, 1965, 1963 and will start 1962 today. We do not have Yearbooks for: 1967, 1969, 1971 and above, or 1961 and below, so anybody that wants to provide that information, it would be greatly appreciated.

In the near future we will add "Zipcodes" to the Alumni that are on the Reunion List, as to give an idea of how far the Alumni is spread over the nation, or as we call it the "East Bear Nation". You will be able to see that addition first on the Class of 1966 site (I wonder why?).

In an article that appeared in the "Kansas City Star" Neighborhood News (Independence & Raytown), Wednesday, February 18, 2004, page 22, "Alumni keep in touch" by Fred Blocher, A group of men (Jim Ralls 1943, Ed Nelson 1943, Herman Mohr 1939, and Jack Fitzgerald 1942) get together once a month at the Big Biscuit Restaurant, US Hwy 40 and Lee's Summit Road. If you know these gentlemen have them contact us, so we can get their Classes listed at this site.

Friday, February 27, 2004, Dear eastbears.org,

Im writing in response to your recent email regarding research on East High School.

Currently the library is closed due to remodeling, but we look forward to your visit when we re-open (tentatively in mid-April). For East High School we have the following yearbooks: 1927-1964, 1966-1970, 1972, 1975-1978, 1985-1989, 1995-1996. We also have some other materials pertaining to East, cited here:

"East Resources at the Kansas City Public Library"

When we re-open, these materials will be available on the 5th Floor of the Downtown Library at 14 W. 10th St. (intersection of 10th and Baltimore).

I hope this information helps, and have a happy Spring! Best wishes, Dan Coleman Special Collections Librarian

"I used to work for Harvester
I used to use my hands
I used to make the tractors and the
combines that plowed and harvested this great land
Now I see my handiwork on the block
everywhere I turn
And I see the clouds cross the weathered faces
and I watch the harvest burn
I quit the plant in '57
Had some time for farmin' then
Banks back then was lendin' money
The banker was the farmer's friend
And I've seen dog days and dusty days;
Late spring snow and early fall sleet;
I've held the leather reins in my hands
and I've felt the soft ground under my feet
Between the hot, dry weather and the taxes
and the Cold War it's been hard to make ends meet
But I always kept the clothes on out backs;
I always put the shoes on our feet
My grandson, he comes home from college
He says, "We get the government we deserve."
My son-in-law just shakes his head and says,
"That little punk, he never had to serve."
And I sit here in the shadow of the suburbs
and look out across these empty fields
I sit here in earshot of the bypass
and all night I listen to the rushin' of the wheels
The big boys, they all got computers:
got incorporated, too
Me, I just know how to raise things
That was all I ever knew
Now, it all comes down to numbers
Now I'm glad that I have quit
Folks these days just don't do nothin'
simply for the love of it
I went into town of the Fourth of July
Watched 'em parade past the Union Jack
Watched 'em break out the brass and beat on the drum
One step forward and two steps back
And I saw a sign on Easy Street,
said "Be Prepared to Stop."
Pray for the Independent , little man
I don't see next year's crop
And I sit here on the back porch in the twilight
And I hear the crickets hum
I sit and watch the lightning in the distance
but the showers never come
I sit here and listen to the wind blow
I sit here and rub my hands
I sit here and listen to the clock strike,
and I wonder when I'll see my companion again"
